As someone who uses Twitter regularly, I am often asked about how it works and if it is a website only useful for marketers.  What I explain is that Twitter is a site for micro-blogging and, when managed well, can be an external real-time database of information on any personal or professional interest you may have.  Also, it may be used to communicate out to people that have decided to follow your updates. I have a personal account in which I follow people that I find professionally interesting, like industry analysts; IT thought leaders; and journalist. Twitter can be a great source of new ideas, up to the minute market information and yes, sometime the odd iPhone app that is a simply a must have… like the recent Mr. T quote generator, iPity, thanks to Shamus at TechTarget.
